✨The James Joyce Tower and Museum, located in Sandycove, Dublin, was where James Joyce spent six nights in 1904. The tower is now a Martello tower and has been turned into a museum in honor of the world-famous writer.

✨Joyce enthusiasts will be delighted to know that the opening scenes of his 1922 novel Ulysses take place in the very same tower that is now a place of pilgrimage – especially on Bloomsday. Best of all, admission is free!

✨Joyce’s university friend, Oliver St. John Gogarty, leased the tower from the War Office with the intention of “Hellenising” Ireland. Joyce stayed there for six days, from September 9th to the 14th 1904. Gogarty later reported that Joyce’s sudden departure was due to an incident in the middle of the night involving a loaded revolver.

✨The morning after the incident that would immortalize Gogarty as “Stately, plump Buck Mulligan”, the opening scenes of Ulysses are set.

✨The tower has now been turned into a museum dedicated to Joyce, and displays some of his personal possessions as well as other memorabilia associated with Ulysses.

✨The Tower became a museum that opened to the public on 16 June 1962, with Dublin artist John Ryan as the driving force behind its conversion. Ryan also rescued the front door of 7 Eccles Street (now at the James Joyce Centre) from demolition and organized the Bloomsday Celebration in 1954 with Brian O’Nolan.

✨The James Joyce Tower is open Thursday through Sunday from 10am to 4pm. Admission is free but booking a visit in advance on the website requires a small donation. The museum is run entirely by the Friends of Joyce Tower Society on a voluntary basis.
