✨The museum was built in 1856 to house part of the collection of the Royal Dublin Society. Later on, the building and collection were passed down to the State.

✨zoology, geology, and botany collections were combined to form the Natural History Collection; however, the geological collection has been in storage since the 1960s, and the botanical collection was transferred to National Botanic Gardens in 1970.

✨The museum has been free to the public for decades, and attendance has steadily grown over the years. Despite chronic staff shortages and two of its four floors being closed since 2007, the museum has managed to attract more and more visitors each year. After temporarily closing due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the museum reopened its doors in August 2022.

✨The Natural History Collection houses over 2 million items related to zoology and geology, with a million of those being specimens of insects.

✨The museum is part of the National Development Plan 2018-2027, which was announced in 2018. The plan includes an allocation for the construction of a side extension, designed not to interfere with the historic building. The extension will include display space, as well as an education space, a café, a shop, lifts and other disabled-access facilitation.

✨The National Museum of Ireland has a streamlined organization structure and budget, with one Director overseeing everything and Keepers for each major collection, including Natural History. This makes it much easier for our visitors to know who to go to with any questions or problems they may have.

✨ Admission to all four sites of the National Museum of Ireland is free
